Truthiness in Action

Mark Evanier has the links and the commentary about it. I'm just going to AOL here and say "Me Too."

The Stanford Prison Experiment

Today's article on Damn Interesting is about the infamous Stanford Prison Experiment. If you haven't read about this one, go read now.

Also a good read is Milgram's obediance studies, in which good people do extremely bad things just because someone in authority tells them to. Frightening, and very important to keep in mind in today's world.

Handy Comparison

Oil Prices Map compared to Shrubya's Popularity. Funny. No, I don't subscribe to the theory of the blogger I'm linking to, but I did notice this myself when I checked out the GasBuddy Map. Shrubya is only popular where gas prices aren't as insanely high. Maybe he called up his gas company buddies, after all.

Ouch in the Wallet

Want to know how much you are getting gouged by the record-profits-oil-companies when you go to the gas pump to fill up your car? Check it out.

And, you know, I seem to recall Shrubya criticizing Clinton when gas prices got high, saying that if Shrubya was President, he'd call up his oil buddies and have them lower the prices. So... he's president. Why hasn't he called up his oil buddies and got them to lower the prices? Could it be... he was lying all along?

Race for the Cure!

Last night my sister Lisa and I got together to exchange various stuff (she needed the new Who) and while we were together we formed a team for the Puget Sound Race for the Cure. I don't particularly need individual donations, but if you'd like to support our team, we're the Browncoats. If you live in the area and want to join us, please register for the Family Co-Ed 5K Walk, and feel free to join our team.

Gasoline Prices

Mark Evanier on gasoline prices.

Bob Harris on Iran

Bob Harris, Jeopardy champion and all-around smart guy, points out how incredibly stupid attacking Iran (as Shrubya is reportedly planning) would be. Be sure to check out the animation he links to which explains why using nuclear bunker-busters is an incredibly stupid idea that would kill millions of innocent people. If you still think attacking Iran is a good idea after reading these links, then you are a sick sick person who needs some serious mental help.

All We Have To Fear...

...Is Fear Itself... Firedoglake explains how the neocons are using fear to control the nation. Rudeness warning: if you are sympathetic to the neocons, you might be offended about the way the article accurately describes you.

Metafilter Political Discussion

"It amazes me how the more vocal abortion opponents care only that the mother gives birth, not that the child has a decent life." - Oaf (Metafilter)

In El Salvador, abortion is illegal. Metafilter links to an article about how that has worked out for the women who live there.

And, as usual, it's a casual comment on the really nasty long thread that gets to the heart of the issue for me. I'm anti-abortion, but pro-choice, because the people who claim to be "pro-life" tend to simply be more anti-sex... they want to control women's bodies. And once those children are born, "pro-life" idiots seem to think it's just fine that the babies die in poverty and filth. Because being "pro-life" is all about controlling other people, not about helping them.

Yahoo News Points Out Media Error

Yahoo News, of all places, points out a grossly inaccurate piece of reporting by Bloomberg. Wow.

Let's make this absolutely clear: Even if Iran keeps working on their nuclear program at a faster pace than they are going today, there is still NO THREAT of them having a nuclear bomb anytime within a few years. And yet we have a President who thinks it's ok to drop NUCLEAR WEAPONS ON IRAN. Think about that. We have a President who thinks it's ok to NUKE a country that is currently NO THREAT TO US.

Tell me again why we haven't impeached him and his entire group of cronies and tossed them all in prison for the rest of their miserable murderous lives?

Political Linkdump

National Debt Graph (2007 Budget data), using data from the White House.

Molly Ivins on the death of newspapers.

Animated map of coalition military fatalities in Iraq. The original project was meant to show all fatalities, but the creator couldn't find enough data on Iraqi and civilian deaths to justify completing the project.

Moving back to the forgotten war... Bush couldn't be bothered to finish the job in Afghanistan, and now it's come back to haunt him. Of course, he also should have finished hunting down Osama, but he forgot 9/11 too... except when he can use it to convince gullible Americans to help line his oil buddies' pockets by pretending that Iraq was behind the attacks and not Osama Bin Forgotten.
