What the?

This has got to be the most bizarre political story I've heard recently. Some small part of me is convinced the whole thing was just made up by somebody to fool ... I don't know who. Truly odd beyond anything I've seen recently. If it is true, and I'm not sure it is, the hypocrisy on the part of conservatives involved in this is mind-blowing.
